Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been one of the standouts early on during training camp.
Fresh off of his first career Super Bowl appearance, Hurts inked a $255 million contract extension that briefly made him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. But, instead of celebrating this offseason, Hurts appears to be more motivated than ever and it’s shown during training camp.
The Eagles’ starting quarterback looks more comfortable than ever under center and he’s been dissecting the first-team defense through the first five days of camp. During that span, Hurts has completed 56 of 72 passes (77.7 percent) with four touchdowns and no interceptions.
By comparison, Hurts completed 66.5 percent of his passes with 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions last season.
Hurts Has A History Of Improving During The Offseason
Hurts has a penchant for improving during the offseason and he’s carried over that progress into the regular season. In fact, he’s improved his completion percentage and touchdown-to-interception ratio in each of his first three NFL seasons.
As a rookie, Hurts completed just 52 percent of his passes but flashed his potential as a runner. In Year 2, he made strides in Nick Sirianni’s offense as a passer, completing 61.3 percent of his throws for 3,144 yards but finished with only 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Last season, he improved upon those numbers once again, throwing for 3,701 yards with 22 touchdowns and only six picks. The Eagles also relied on Hurts in the run game, especially in the red zone. He accounted for 13 touchdowns on the ground in 2022, up from 10 TDs the season prior.
Hurts Using Super Bowl Loss For Motivation In 2023
Despite suffering a heartbreaking loss in Super Bowl LVII, Hurts didn’t hang his head during the offseason. Instead, he’s using the experience as motivation.
Hurts has reportedly changed the background of his phone to a photo of him walking off of the field, draped in red and white confetti, following the Eagles’ Super Bowl 2023 loss.
When asked about his phone background, Hurts steered away from answering, telling Peter King, “I care not to comment on that. You guys wouldn’t know [that’s my background] if it was up to me. So, there ain’t much to say about it.”
