The Philadelphia Eagles training camp is over after 15 practices, including joint practices with the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts.
With the Eagles coming off of a disappointing end to their 2022 season, many fans silently wondered if the franchise might experience a Super Bowl hangover in 2023.
So far, there have been no signs of that at training camp, especially from franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Hurts put together his best training camp in an Eagles’ uniform, displaying his arm talent, athleticism, and leadership throughout the practice sessions.
Unlike previous seasons, Hurts came into this year’s camp without many question marks after proving himself a year ago. However, he still made significant strides in the offseason, especially as a passer.
Jalen Hurts Training Camp Grade: A+
Here are our training camp grades for Hurts in 2023.
Hint: Hurts might be in line for an MVP-caliber campaign.
Rushing Grade: A+
According to reports, Hurts looked leaner and quicker than he did last year.
He had a few impressive runs during camp and his explosiveness was on display nearly every time that he took off to run. Hurts also decided to run more often in camp this season, showcasing breakaway speed at times.
The Eagles’ QB has rushed for over 750 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons but he might be even more dangerous as a runner in 2023.
Given how often Hurts ran the ball in the red zone during camp, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him eclipse his 13-touchdown total from last season.
Passing Grade: A+
Not only did Hurts finish with his highest completion percentage ever during training camp but he also attempted tougher throws in 2023.
Hurts cut down on his turnovers considerably in training camp this season. He threw only four interceptions in 241 attempts and rarely made questionable decisions with the football. Despite committing a costly turnover in the Super Bowl, taking care of the football has been one of Hurts’ greatest strengths under center.
In joint practices against the Browns and Colts, Hurts was on fire. In fact, he ended off camp by completing 15 of 19 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions versus the Colts. He also went 10 for 14 with four touchdowns and no interceptions in his final practice versus the Browns.
Hurts displayed an impressive connection with both AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith.
Per Eliot Shorr-Parks, Browns had arguably the best training camp by a wide receiver in his 11 years of covering the team.
Final Jalen Hurts Training Camp Stats
Hurts finished training camp with 393 reps, his fewest ever in an Eagles’ uniform. That number is down just over 5 percent from a year ago, when he logged 415 training camp reps.
As we noted previously, Philadelphia did less red zone work during camp this year, which led to diminished touchdown totals for the Eagles’ QB.
However, that doesn’t take away from Hurts’ impressive training camp stats.
When competing in 7v7 and 11v11 drills, he completed 74.7 percent of his passes (180 for 241) with 17 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
The only area of improvement for Hurts came in the red zone, where he missed a few easy throws and often relied on his ability as a runner to punch the ball in the end zone.
