The Philadelphia Eagles announced their official 53-man roster for the 2023 season on Tuesday. Unfortunately, two of those players won’t be making it to the practice squad, thanks to a pair of former Eagles assistants. Find out who was claimed by and by which teams.
Jonathan Gannon, Cardinals Claim K’Von Wallace
The Eagles made their final roster cuts on Tuesday and fans were sad to see a few players go, including safety K’Von Wallace.
Apparently, former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon felt the same way. The new Arizona Cardinals head coach quickly placed a waiver claim on Wallace and five other players cut from other NFL teams.
Wallace was expected to add depth to the team’s collection of defensive backs. The Eagles came into camp with only two returning safeties and Wallace even got some first-team reps in training camp but was ultimately let go. The emergence of rookie Sydney Brown and the steady veteran presence of Terrell Edmunds gave the Eagles enough confidence to see if Wallace could make his way onto the practice squad.
Of course, Gannon is very familiar with Wallace’s skill set after coaching him for the past two in Philadelphia.
Josh Sills Claimed By Colts, Shan Steichen
The Indianapolis Colts haven’t even played a game but the odds already seem stacked against head coach Shane Steichen.
Running back Jonathan Taylor has been battling management for a new deal and remains on the PUP list to begin the season. However, the former Eagles’ offensive coordinator wasted no time in adding one of his former players on Wednesday.
The Colts signed recently reinstated offensive lineman Josh Sills. Indianapolis got an up close and personal look at Sills during Colts-Eagles joint practices.
Sills joins two other waiver claims from Indianapolis.
Prior to returning to Eagles training camp, Sills was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list right before the Super Bowl but was allowed to return to the team following his acquittal.
