Eagles Training Camp Stats For Every Player on Offense

The 2023 Philadelphia Eagles training camp is complete and the numbers are finally in.

Eagles’ beat reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks released his training camp stats for 2023 and a few players stood out, including Jalen Hurts and top target AJ Brown, who appear to have picked up where they left off a season ago.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Gainwell appears to have seized control of the Eagles’ running back competition. Gainwell is in line to be the starter heading out of training camp. Not only did he lead the Eagles backfield in first-team carries by a wide margin, but he also led the team in catches, a strong sign considering D’Andre Swift’s presence in the running back room.

As expected, Dallas Goedert dominated the touches among tight ends.

Jalen Hurts Training Camp Stats (2021-2023)

Despite taking limited reps compared to years past, Hurts is coming off of his best training camp in an Eagles’ uniform.

The 2023 training camp was his third in Philadelphia and head coach Nick Sirianni gave Hurts a bit more of a breather this time around.

The Eagles’ QB had his training camp reps reduced by five percent in 2023 and he attempted 15 percent fewer passes. Hurts had 415 reps and 285 pass attempts a year ago. In 2023, those numbers have dropped to 393 and 241, respectively.

Part of the reason for that was Hurts’ confidence as a runner. He came into camp leaner and faster than last season, showcasing dangerous top-end speed.

All in all, Hurts had an excellent training camp, earning an A+ grade from our staff, and he performed well in joint practices versus both the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts.

Eagles Training Camp Stats: Running Backs

While Philadelphia entered training camp with some question marks at running back, this could turn out to be one of the strongest position groups on offense.

Kenneth Gainwell emerged as the clear starting running back coming out of training camp and that’s a good sign for the Eagles.

Gainwell led the team with 40 carries, 80 percent of which came with the first team, the highest of any running back. The third-year pro also led all running backs in receptions with 21 on 24 targets.

Given that Gainwell is trusted in pass protection, there’s a chance that Sirianni could give him the opportunity to be an every-down back.

Swift drew the most targets out of the backfield with 29 but finished with just 19 catches and 40 percent of his carries came with the second team.

Fellow offseason acquisition Rashaad Penny received the second-most carries of any running back with 38.

Penny still could be relied upon in short-yardage situations or if Gainwell goes down with an injury, but for now, it appears he will have a limited role. He is not much of a factor in the passing game and more than 60 percent of his carries came with the second team. However, he could hit the ground running when given the opportunity.

Eagles Training Camp Stats: Wide Receivers

In his second season in Eagles training camp, AJ Brown looked more comfortable and dominated at times. He led the entire team in targets, which is rare for a wide receiver. Many times, quarterbacks are forced to check down during camp but Brown was able to get consistently open and was a force in 1v1 situations.

DeVonta Smith also had a strong and came on strong, especially in the red zone. Smith led all players in touchdowns with seven and made some highlight-reel catches throughout the 15-day camp.

Meanwhile, the battle for the Eagles’ No. 3 WR position might end up being more complicated than anticipated. Initially, it seemed Quez Watkins was running away with the job to be the Eagles’ slot receiver but Olamide Zaccheus came on strong to finish camp. Deon Cain also performed well, especially in the red zone. He secured 82 percent of his targets and was the only player outside of Brown or Smith to catch multiple touchdowns.

Perhaps Sirianni is planning to use all three in more of a situational role this season.

Another number that stands out — 40 targets for undrafted free agent Joseph Ngata, who earned the trust of the Eagles’ backup QBs and even earned himself some first-team reps.

Eagles Training Camp Stats: Tight Ends

There were no surprises here.

Goedert is undoubtedly the No. 1 tight end in Philadelphia but things get a bit more hazy from there.

Jack Stoll appears to be in line to be more of a blocking tight end but the number of targets for Grant Calcaterra was a bit of a surprise. Expect Calcaterra to be more involved in the passing game in 2023.

Don’t forget about 6-foot-7 Tyree Jackson, who could draw some red zone looks during the regular season.
