Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz recently spoke on how the words of his high school coach helped motivate him to make it to the NFL.
Wentz starred at North Dakota State and became the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but he might have had the confidence to pursue his dream had it not been for one of his coaches.
The former Eagles starting quarterback sat down with The Pure Athlete Podcast to discuss the role that his freshman football coach had on his NFL journey.
“Nick Walker, he was my freshman football coach,” Wentz said. “He told me that I was as good as anyone that he’s ever coached at throwing the football….but for him to tell me that…it just gave me so much confidence to push it to the next level”
Will Carson Wentz Find A New NFL Home?
While Wentz has yet to find a home following another underwhelming season with the Washington Commanders, many Eagles fans were silently hoping to bring the former No. 2 pick back to Philadelphia.
Wentz was in the midst of an MVP season in 2017 before injuring his knee.
The rest, of course, is history. Nick Foles took over for Wentz that season and led the Eagles to an improbable Super Bowl victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Since then, Wentz’s confidence under center has waned and it’s shown with inconsistent play on the field.
In 2021, Wentz finished with 3,563 passing yards with 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. But he regressed in his only season with the Commanders, throwing nine picks in just eight games.
For his NFL career, Wentz has thrown for 22,129 yards with 151 touchdowns and 66 interceptions but has never quite returned to the form that saw him quickly ascend to one of the league’s best young quarterbacks.
Now 30 years old, the former Eagles quarterback is open to being a backup but no teams have shown significant interest in bringing in the veteran signal-caller.
