All the talk at Philadelphia Eagles training camp in 2023 has been about Jalen Hurts’ perceived progress on the field and in the locker room.
Hurts is coming off of arguably the greatest Super Bowl performance ever by a quarterback but showed up to camp more motivated than ever to lead the Eagles back to the promised land. In his fourth NFL season, Hurts has shown a special kind of maturity over the offseason, but after a fast start, he’s struggled in his last two training camp practices.
Through the first seven practices, Hurts completed 80 of 104 passes with six touchdowns and only one interception. His completion percentage of 77 percent was eight points higher than last year. He has also cut down considerably on his turnovers. In 2022, he had four interceptions already against the vaunted Eagles’ defense.
However, he’s struggled since then, turning in poor performances under center with the first team offense on Tuesday and Wednesday. Over the last two days, Hurts completed 17 of 27 passes and turned the ball over on his final possession of Wednesday’s practice.

Hurts Struggles In Back-To-Back Practices At Eagles Training Camp
Hurts celebrated his birthday on Monday by being named No. 3 on the NFL top 100 list but didn’t have a good day upon returning to training camp. On Tuesday, Hurts finished 10 of 14 but threw an interception and nearly had another on a situational red zone play.
While he had a few nice throws, he did miss an easy one to Devonta Smith.
On Wednesday, things didn’t get much better, as Hurts finished a lackluster 7 of 13 passing with no touchdowns or interceptions. According to Eliot Shorr-Parks, Hurts missed throws that fans would expect him to make, including an easy completion to Jack Stoll in the flat.
Overall it wasn’t a great showing from Hurts, who earned a C- grade from Shorr-Parks for his performance.
Hurts Without Devonta Smith On Wednesday
It’s possible that Hurts was missing one of his top targets.
Devonta Smith was excused from practice due to personal reasons and did not participate in team drills.
Smith was recently named of the NFL’s top-100 players after finishing with 1,196 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his sophomore season. Together with A.J. Brown, Smith is expected to form one of the NFL’s best wide receiver duos in 2023.
